This is a known issue that we are working to understand. We've learned this can happen if the kettle is submerged in water (or if one of the connector pieces is exposed to water).
If this is the case, the majority of customers have reported that leaving the kettle and base apart to completely dry for a few days remedies the issue. We'd recommend removing the lid of the kettle and placing the kettle upside down on a cloth for 2-3 days.
